I was looking at several different binoculars, Vortex Talon HD, Vortex Viper HD, Redfiled Rebel and Leupold BX-4, to name a few. I found myself quickly going back and forth between the Viper HD and Monarch 7 as the top performers. As far as clarity goes, I could not easily discern a difference between the two. The field of the view on the Monarch was quite wide compared to the Viper though and, along with lower price point, was what tipped the scales for me. Testing these in my house at night with all of the lights off and only ambient moon light coming through the cracks in the blinds I could not see a thing with the naked eye however when I pulled the Monarch up to view I could suddenly see. Now don't be fooled I'm not talking about "who turned the lights on" see but rather I could now make out a DVD/Book Case about 12 yards away. While I couldn't quite read the text on the DVD splines I could see that there was writing so the contrast was still very nice, in my opinion, for an environment in which I couldn't see my hand in front of my face. For the price point 400-700 I could not find or ask for a better optic. I'm sure I will be replacing my rifle scope soon so it can compete with the light gathering and clarity of these binoculars.
