I purchased this for use on my recent elk hunt in Colorado. Before we left, I filled a 20oz bottle at home to test it out. It took no time at all and was really easy to use. But, after filling 2, 32oz Nalgene bottles about 3 hours into the first day of my 10 day hunt this thing shut down. Thank god 2 of the other guys purchased Sawyer Squeeze filters. The HyperFlow Microfilter is an absolute joke. Do not buy it if you plan on filtering more than 82oz of water.
Find another solution
I have used this section hiking on the AT and performance was ok, but despite backwashing water filtration became a major chore. We used it last year on a 10 day trip in the boundary waters and performance was awful. We used two new cartridges over the course of the trip and ended up boiling water to be safe.......and this is in the boundary waters where the water is pretty pristine. Very disappointing. I am on this website looking for a better solution.
I would read reviews at least a year old.
This product is good off the shelf and so light for a fast filter.
BUT, the combined issues of:
- Not working well on backflow flushes
- Needing Lubricant (Not included)
- Having hard to find valve parts
- Having fragile valves (Especially the small orange one)
- Being unable to allow to freeze,
Make it a bit too much hassle, which is too bad because when it's brand new it rockets clean water.
If they can include lube and spare valves the troubles would be much less.

Reliable filter for backcountry excursions
I have used it on a regular basis in and around So California - hunting, hiking, backpacking, etc. I use it mostly as a group filter as for solo trip I use a smaller filter. I've had none of the problems that some others have listed. I have back flushed the filter at home a few times for the heck of it. It continues to filter water quickly with minimal effort. The pre filter has a velcro strap to hold a rock or such. This holds the pre filter at the bottom of the creek or wherever you place it. My only complaint is that mine weighs more than the listed weight on this website, only a couple of oz difference but it adds up.
Fastest System Yet
I have used this filter about 10 times now and It has not shown any sign off clogging; its fast and fills a 32oz nalgene (adapter cap included) in 20 strokes. It also attaches to a MSR Dromedary Bag, so you can have reserve water if needed (we always use every bit of pumped water for hanging out at the campfire and early morning cooking and refills for the next days hike). We have had several MSR water filters, stoves, etc... Always quality mountaineering products.

Great piece of gear
Super easy to use and backflow. The flow rate is as advertised.
This is finally my solution
I am using this, with a bit of jiggering, to fill my Osprey 3L bladder while it is in my pack
Great Basic Filtration System
Used for multi day backpacking trips. Straight forward, easy to use, basic filtration. Use mainly for one or two people because it is manual vs gravity, so does take some time- nothing out of the ordinary.
I've had this filter for years and it never disappoints. It's light, compact, very fast and reliable. I like the fact that it can be back flushed in the field. Nice work, MSR.
An essential item for all back country travel.
Fantastic product, been searching for a portable filter with these features for several years. Clean fresh water is now available any time.
