Sig Sauer SP2022

sig sauer sp2022 fde pistol

It’s a term you might have picked up in high school chemistry class, polymer. It may not mean a lot to the general public, but when it comes to lightweight pistols, polymer has revolutionized the market. Sig Saur introduced the P2022 into their renowned lineup of high-quality handguns in 1998 with the original model available in .40 Smith and Wesson. Over the following year, Sig Saur added the .357 SIG and ultimately, the 9mm to the platform.

Prior to the introduction of the polymer construction of the P2022, Sig Saur used all steel construction in their wide variety of pistols. The addition of a polymer handgun to the line was a big step in manufacturing for the firearms manufacturer, but it proved to be a lucrative move for the company.

The P2022 gained instant popularity around the world with law enforcement agencies, military applications, and a widely enthusiastic public with buyers flocking to the new design.

At 5.7 inches, the P2022 is slightly higher than competing polymer models made by other manufacturers, but many shooters, especially those with larger hands appreciate the extra height.

Sig Saur advertises the P2022 as “the first polymer handgun tough enough to be called a SIG. And it's only gotten better with time,” a statement that has proven to be true over the intervening two decades since its introduction. There are now a dozen versions of the P2022 with more in the planning and development stage. All share the high quality and performance standards that Sig Saur demands from all its products.

Sig Sauer SP2022 3.9in Black Nitron Pistol

The Nitron is the introductory model of the P2022 and is the lowest-priced pistol in the series. The Nitron has a wide platform of different styles available, with currently seven versions available for purchase. The primary difference in these seven varieties is caliber and magazine capacity.

The variations are all chambered in either 9mm Luger or .40 caliber Smith and Wesson. The magazine capacity is primarily 10 rounds, but there are a couple of models with 12 and 15-round magazines available.

While none of these models are California compliant, all are legal firearms in Colorado, and the 10-round capacity magazine styles are New York compliant as well.

Sig Sauer SP2022 9mm Luger 3.9in Black Nitron Pistol - 15+1 Rounds

Sig Saur has squeezed in half again as many 9mm cartridges in this pistol as the standard 10-round capacity version with little noticeable difference in grip. You will notice the slightly higher loaded weight of 15 versus 10-rounds, but that is to be expected.

The polymer frame remains one of the most durable features you can find in a semi-automatic pistol. Designed to be impervious to rain, saltwater, sand, snow, and ice, this pistol is well established from desert climates to the far northern latitudes and in tropical and seaside locations as well.

This pistol comes in a desert tan finish FDE version as well.

California is the most heavily populated state in America, and home to some of the worst criminal activity. Finding a reliable self-defense pistol amid the many regulations written for semi-automatic pistol ownership can be a challenge. Sig Saur has taken the guesswork out of the process with a version of the SP2022 in 9mm Luger that is not only legal in the Golden State, but legal in Colorado and New York, also heavily regulate states, as well.

The standard SP2022 polymer frame is fitted with a 10-round magazine and comes equipped with Sig Saur’s proprietary SigLIght Night Sights. Other than those two specifications, it is a nearly identical pistol to the Nitron.

These limited production pistols represent a slice of history since they will no longer be produced in Germany. Collectors will quickly take note of this final run in the homeland of a company that has produced firearms since the 1700s.

American production operations by Sig Saur began in 1988 with its most popular pistols going into production here in the early 1990s. While they’re available, you can own a piece of Sig Saur history as long as the supply lasts.
