This really is a great value, especially when you take into consideration the Vortex warranty. For this class of scope it is bright, clear and holds its zero really well on my 30-06. I love that you can see where you are at on the zoom from behind the scope (like you were looking through it) rather than having to look on top of the scope to see the numbers. You can get a feel for this in my included photos. It just makes more sense to build it that way and works really well. Everything about the scope feels tight and solid. Being that it's a 50mm objective it sits a little higher than I'm used to but that's part of the trade off for a bright scope and I can and have used this out to 400+ yards at 1/2 hr. after sunset with no problems. That's the brightness I need in my big game rifles so this works well for me. You can see from my photos that it's seen some use and abuse but I've yet to have a problem and even if I did I know I could count on Vortex to make it right. I'm very satisfied with my purchase!

Here is the all the bad parts to this scope-
Eye relief on max power is less than 2 inches. Even on low power, the eye relief is under 3 inches. If you have butler creek scope caps, the little tab that opens the eye piece will bite you on the nose. The edge clarity is horrible and you will need the sun shade when looking sunward. Maximum elevation adjustment was right at 58 MOA, not the advertised 65 MOA- The same as most Leupold 1 inch scope tubes (even though the Vortex is a 30mm tube). The adjustments are mushy and be careful not to pull up on the caps- a nice feature to zero the turret, but easy to mess up in the field.
Now for the worst part. When hunting this past Fall, the zero shifted over 2 feet at 100 yards. It took many shots to figure this out in the field. All this and the scope had not been subjected to excessive shock. After removing the scope and centering the crosshairs using a mirror, I flipped the scope over and gave it a gentle tap on the carpet. I then checked the zero in the mirror to see the crosshairs appearing to have shifted 1/2 inch in the scope. By reversing this procedure, the crosshairs returned to zero. So each time I had fired the gun, the crosshairs had the ability to shake all over.
Now the good:
The power adjustment knob is smooth and the power setting easy to see when behind the scope. The tube seems solid and rugged and has ample room for mounting on most set ups. The BDC reticle is simple and the subtensions easy to find on the website to use for your own calculations. Their customer service is great and they were willing to repair it. But in the end, customer service can't give me back a hunt you have draw in a lottery. For the price, I would go with a Leupold, but since I had been given a Swarovski, I replaced it with that and have no complaints except the cost to buy another for my next rifle! Perhaps I will give Vortex another try, but until then, my confidence in this scope is shattered.

Best BDC Reticle I've used!!!

By

from Tullahoma, TN

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Viper Rifle Scope:

I recently acquired a DPMS LR-308, my first AR platform rifle in 308 Win. I knew I wanted to eventually paint the rifle but not before it satisfied my accuracy requirements. I decided to scope it with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 PA with the Dead Hold BDC and Vortex Viper scope mount. I was not disappointed! As recommended by Vortex for the 308, I sighted the main crosshair dead on at 100 yards. Just like my other two Vortex scopes the optics were very bright and clear making the sight in a breeze. I moved the target to 200 yards and expected that I would have to tweak a bit since no BDC reticle is really that exact, right? WRONG!!! I didn't have to touch a thing. The same was true at 300 yards. I am absolutely sold on the Dead Hold BDC reticle.

One of my favorite Vortex Scopes!

By

from Tullahoma, TN

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Viper Rifle Scope:

I had always been a Leupold fan and used their scopes for competitive shooting for years but Vortex has changed all that! While I no longer compete, I do still love long range shooting and hunting. My custom Remington 22-250 "coyote" rifle wears a Vortex Viper 3.5-10x50 scope with Dead Hold BDC reticle and I could not be happier! The sharpness, clarity and precision of the Vortex scope rivals anything I have ever used. I was so impressed with it that I now also own Vortex binoculars and spotting scopes as well. My last trip to the range with this combo produced a 3/4" group at 200 yards and a 1 1/4" group at 300 yards. It just doesn't get much better than that!

Solid scope

By

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Viper Rifle Scope:

Don't let the price fool you this scope is incredible for the dollar. Out performs scopes of other manufacturers costing much more and is incredibly clear and once a zero is locked in it holds. This is my first BDC scope and it's amazingly precise and with some range work confirming the drops a deadly hunting scope.

I bought a viper put it on my Weatherby 30.06 and couldn't be happier if I had put a five thousand dollar scope on it! Now I'm the proud owner of six Vortex scopes not counting the one I bought for my sons 30.06. Some day I hope to have one on every firearnm I own.

Between this and a tikka 7mm, there is nothing more a guy needs for a blue collar type 1000 yard set up. Love the zero reset on the turret.

I've Two Vipers

By

from Mobile, AL

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Viper Rifle Scope:

I've two Vipers.
One is a discontinued Viper' 2-7x32 that I bought new in 2010, it is still going stron on my Saiga ver.21-.308 rifle.
And I've the listed Viper 3-9x40 BDC which is atop a Remington 700 BDL.

As with every Vortex optic I have, I have nothing but good to say about them.

Great scope!

By

from Smith River, CA

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Viper Rifle Scope:

I hunt Colombian Blacktail in the northwest of California near the Oregon border. While hunting the "grey ghost" here you can find yourself with a shot anywhere from 50 yards to 500 yards or more. This scope can handle any distance you can that you can find them. It has a long eye relief. I have a long rifle for my size and this scope works for me awesome.
