This really is a great value, especially when you take into consideration the Vortex warranty. For this class of scope it is bright, clear and holds its zero really well on my 30-06. I love that you can see where you are at on the zoom from behind the scope (like you were looking through it) rather than having to look on top of the scope to see the numbers. You can get a feel for this in my included photos. It just makes more sense to build it that way and works really well. Everything about the scope feels tight and solid. Being that it's a 50mm objective it sits a little higher than I'm used to but that's part of the trade off for a bright scope and I can and have used this out to 400+ yards at 1/2 hr. after sunset with no problems. That's the brightness I need in my big game rifles so this works well for me. You can see from my photos that it's seen some use and abuse but I've yet to have a problem and even if I did I know I could count on Vortex to make it right. I'm very satisfied with my purchase!

Here is the all the bad parts to this scope-
Eye relief on max power is less than 2 inches. Even on low power, the eye relief is under 3 inches. If you have butler creek scope caps, the little tab that opens the eye piece will bite you on the nose. The edge clarity is horrible and you will need the sun shade when looking sunward. Maximum elevation adjustment was right at 58 MOA, not the advertised 65 MOA- The same as most Leupold 1 inch scope tubes (even though the Vortex is a 30mm tube). The adjustments are mushy and be careful not to pull up on the caps- a nice feature to zero the turret, but easy to mess up in the field.
Now for the worst part. When hunting this past Fall, the zero shifted over 2 feet at 100 yards. It took many shots to figure this out in the field. All this and the scope had not been subjected to excessive shock. After removing the scope and centering the crosshairs using a mirror, I flipped the scope over and gave it a gentle tap on the carpet. I then checked the zero in the mirror to see the crosshairs appearing to have shifted 1/2 inch in the scope. By reversing this procedure, the crosshairs returned to zero. So each time I had fired the gun, the crosshairs had the ability to shake all over.
Now the good:
The power adjustment knob is smooth and the power setting easy to see when behind the scope. The tube seems solid and rugged and has ample room for mounting on most set ups. The BDC reticle is simple and the subtensions easy to find on the website to use for your own calculations. Their customer service is great and they were willing to repair it. But in the end, customer service can't give me back a hunt you have draw in a lottery. For the price, I would go with a Leupold, but since I had been given a Swarovski, I replaced it with that and have no complaints except the cost to buy another for my next rifle! Perhaps I will give Vortex another try, but until then, my confidence in this scope is shattered.

Favorite Hunting Scope

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Viper Rifle Scope:

Have this one mounted on my Weatherby VG S2 25-06 Rem.
My father and I always fight on who gets to hunt with this setup. Has never lost it's zero. BDC was super easy to use and hit water jugs out to 500yds. We've harvested loads of deer/elk/antelope with this setup. Great eye relief throughout the magnification range. Very durable. We are super hard on our stuff, and it's held up like Rocky Balboa. VIP warranty gives us peace of mind. We've had over 14 different vortex scopes and binoculars and have never had to use the warranty, however.

Good glass

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Viper Rifle Scope:

I've used nikon and Leupold optics for years and gave this a try and loved it. Won't find a better 30 mm tubed scope for the price the only thing I had to get used to was adjusting my cheek weld under high zoom as the eye relief changes significantly. Once adjusted though it isn't a problem.

Excellent Scope!

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Viper Rifle Scope:

This scope is amazing! The clarity and glass are top notch, the finish of the scope is beautiful. It sits on my Rem700 .308, on the range and in the field there have been ZERO issues. The windage/elevation turrets have a soid click with every adjustment and the MILDOT reticle is pretty sweet. With little instruction on using the scope, my cousin's son picked up my rifle and smoked his first elk - one shot, one kill - thanks to Vortex! I bought this scope because of the VIP lifetime warranty...it was an open box demo. I was weary of buying a demo scope, but after reading countless reviews I have no doubts that Vortex has my back if anything ever happens.

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Viper Rifle Scope:

I could not imagine owning any other brand of rifle scope after seeing the difference with my Viper!! These scopes are the best out there. Whether I am antelope hunting in the desert and reaching out 400+ yards, or elk hunting in the mountains, this is hands down the best scope I have used! Thanks, Vortex!

Accidental Scope purchase

By

from Goodyear,Az

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Viper Rifle Scope:

I was shopping for a scope to put on top of my 300 win mag. Of course I was trying to buy the best optic I could keeping a reasonable budget. I had looked at the Viper scope and liked the look of them but they were actually a little out of my budget. I saw a 6.5-20x50 Viper scope on auction from optics planet. It had the option to make an offer and that's what I tried. To my surprise and delight, my offer was accepted. I installed it on my rifle, took my set up to the range and had my rifle ready to go for my incoming hunt. The glass was super clear. I loved the ability to zoom in if needed. I have the mil-dot reticle , which came into use when I harvest my first Coues whitetail later that year. I took my deer at 334 yards and the mil-dots made that shot do-able for me. Last, though I've yet to use it, the Vortex warranty is fantastic. Thanks Vortex. -Chris M
