I just spent four days scouting the Avintaquin mountains in Utah in preparation for my first Elk hunt later this Fall.  I brought along the Vortex Solo 10x36.  After testing it in the field I can say I'm very satisfied with my purchase, and I'm glad I bought it over some of the other optics that were available.

    Pros:
-The Solo 10x is the same power as my hunting scope, which helps me as I familiarize myself with gauging distance
    - It weighs less than comparable binoculars while still providing the same magnification
-It is less bulky and more portable than any binocular I've ever used.
-It cost about half as much as any of the binoculars
-This thing is built SOLID.  It really does feel sturdy in your hand.  And I'm reassured by the Vortex guarantee that backs up all of their optics in case of any damage.

    Cons:
-The saleswoman pointed out to me when I purchased the Solo that because I would be holding it one-handed I would have less control and therefor notice more shake in the image than I would with a pair of binoculars.  She referenced her own shaky hands for why she did not use one.  While this may be the experience of some, I did not find it to be the case for me.  I was able to see clearly even out to the furthest distances without any noticeable shaking of the image.

Another thing I noted while I was shopping for optics is that because I have an unusual eyeglass prescription (one of my eyes is near-sighted while the other is far-sighted) I seem to have difficulty seeing clear, crisp images through binoculars.  Unless you want to buy a VERY high end pair of binocs you cannot find a pair that has independent diopter adjustment for each eye.  When I tried a monocular the trouble was resolved; I only had to focus the lens for one eye.  That took away a lot of distraction from using the device.  Where I found myself constantly fiddling with the binoculars, the monocular was easy to use every time.

Ugh... you HAVE to use two hands to focus this thing! The image quality *is* their... compares with my DiamondBack 10 x 42's. But if Vortex could just make the focus ring on this thing able to be manipulated smoothly by one finger for one-hand operation (just like the way it feels on the DiamondBack) this tool would multiply in value exponentially!! My hope was that I would be able to use this one-handed. I read a lot of reviews and many sited the stiff focus ring. My hope was that it'd be the same level of stiff I encountered on the Leupold Yosemite BX-1 8x30 binos I have. Those are stiff, but it IS doable with one finger... but no... this monocular IS EVEN STIFFER!! I cannot turn the ring with the same hand that holds the monocular. The rubber knubs on the focus ring just bend over and then your fingertips (Index finger and thumb) lose the leverage of having anything to exert against. I'm hoping that with a lot of working the snot outta the focus ring that over time it *may* loosen up?? I'm just really let down that you can't do one-handed operation with this. I was looking to shave some weight off my pack for times when I know I'm going to pack the spotting scope as well. Also was thinking one-banded operation for when carrying a bow in the other would be optimal. Guess not. :(

    Amazing customer service

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Solo Monocular - Green:

God optics. It's difficult to really judge optics in the store - really you have to get away from the well-lit fluorescent lights to really judge. I took a cheaper monocular to the store for a comparison. To be honest, I didn't notice a huge difference in the store (but I bought it anyway based on good reviews). The difference really became apparent while comparing the two at dusk/twilight while camping.

I don't usually write reviews but as the title suggests I wanted to give big thumbs up for their customer service. I had to return the product for a loose lens very shortly after purchasing it. Customer service up here in Canada promptly emailed me a return shipping label with postage included, and shipped a new product back to within a few days. Three cheers for Amber in the Canadian office in Guelph!

Now the monocular is not really one of their high-end products, so I was doubly impressed at the level of service. It's so refreshing to purchase a product and find there's excellent support if required.

Oh, and somebody picked up the phone when I called- no automated attendant. That's worth alot to me right there.

    Great value

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Solo Monocular - Green:

I bought the 10x36 model early 2016 and I have been waiting to write a review until I had a chance to test it. I am very impressed with the crisp and clear optics and the excellent performance when the light is low. I live in Sweden, where the sun is up all summer and where it gets dark at 15.00 in the winter.

I would say the neoprene cover is better than the carrier case shown in the manual. I have both thanks to Vortex excellent customer service that sent me one free of charge. The neoprene cover give a better protection if, for instance, if you fumble and drop the monocular on a rock (as I have done a couple of times) or when you shove it into your knapsack. It is small and light, so you will bring it on the stroll or the day hike.

All in all, a great piece of optics for a great price.

    Great Compact Tool

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Solo Monocular - Green:

Great product. I used it on a couple of trips and really enjoyed it. The compact size makes the Solo a breeze to pack (whether in a backpack or carry on bag). Despite the small size, the rubberized body is just large enough to grip and handle easily, including adjusting the focus. The Solo survived in the Rockies and in the tropics of Central America without hiccup. Great compromise if you cannot carry full binoculars and want to take a closer look at something.

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Solo Monocular - Green:

I was a bit apprehensive on using a monocular for primary classing but found that the size and convenience of this scope had me grabbing it in leiu of my binos 9 out of 10 times. Definitely a handy tool and well built. Very bright glass and positive focus. Happy with my purchase

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Solo Monocular - Green:

this was a christmas present from my brother - my dad thought it was a waste, but once he tried it he was really impressed with the clarity and balance (lack of shaking) when spotting out of the blind. I use this for hog hunting when I see movement in the brush.

I use this at both the pistol range and the indoor archery range. Easy to operate with one hand. Compact and powerful enough to see bullet holes and arrows at 20 yds.

Perfect for lightening your hunting pack

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Solo Monocular - Green:

When I'm hunting out of my fixed blind for deer, I love my binoculars. But when I'm stalk hunting, the vortex solo 8x25 is in my pocket. It's perfect for Indiana and Ohio hunting. It is small and light and keeps me from using my scope to identify movement.

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Solo Monocular - Green:

Just got this in the mail yesterday. I must say I'm impressed. It's easy to use and all the negative reviews are ridiculous. You can operate it with one hand, you can hold it steady past 100 yards, and it's really clear. One of the best lightweight tools I'll have in my bag.
