I've been running the new 4.5-27x Gen two for awhile now. So I thought I would post up a review of it's durability over those course of a lot of abuse and rounds. I feel people on forums/reviews are always so quick to bash a company or product when something goes wrong, but seldom do you hear from someone when everything has gone right, and that's what I intend to do.

Where it's been:
So far it's seen the Gap Grind Pro/Am, Voigt PRS match, the PRS Finale, Idaho PRS match, as well as practice, monthly matches, and packed all over the mountains of Oregon where I took my first deer ever with it! Somewhere in the realm of 1,500 rounds, and about 12-15k miles of travel.

Overall impressions:
The Gen 2 has impressed me in about every possible way. The glass is outstanding, turrets are spot on, zoom range is perfect, and eye box is very forgiving. After putting a lot of rounds under it, I honestly don't know what I would change on it. I've never been able to say that about any other scope I've put time behind. This scope is the closest thing to perfect I've ever used and even saying "closest thing" I still don't know what I'd change about it!

Durability:
Let's face it, this is what matters. The last thing you want is a piece of gear to go down on you when you need it most. For me, that's when I've spent close to $1k to fly out and be at a big match. If my scope were to break, guess what? I'm out of that match and the money I spent to be there. We can all sit behind our keyboards and nit pick optic specs all day long, and say this glass is better, or this turret feels like that. The point is all that stuff goes out the window when that piece of gear you need most fails. We all need to be able to rely on our gear for one purpose or another. So this is what matters most.

As I stated earlier I've put a lot of rounds under this scope in the time I've have it, and not all of them have been quite so "easy" on it. At the PRS Finale, the biggest match that matters most to everyone I dumped the gun hard. There was a rock pile and on the second position which was the highest point on the pile I set the rifle down and accidentally dropped my bag. I reached down to get my bad and the rifle slipped, fell over (directly on the illumination/parallax turret, and tumbled down the rock pile. People who were there can attest to it not being a gentle fall. For just a split second my heart sank. I've seen A LOT easier falls knock scopes off, and I still had 3 or 4 stages left.

Being under the clock I didn't have time to throughly check out the scope damage or anything else. I picked it up and setup my next shot. The next shot happened to be quite a far one, in the 700 yard range if my memory serves me correct. I pulled the trigger and my shot center punched the target, and my faith was restored. I finished up the match and put my gear away.

A fellow shooter who knew what happened and had also just purchased a Gen 2 asked if when I got home and went to the range to check zero, if I would let him know what I found. So after that fall, and flying all the way back to Portland, OR from Texas I went to the range to see what I would find. My zero was dead on, just the way I had left it. Not only did the fall not affect my zero, neither did the "gentle" luggage handlers, or the flight home.

Final Thoughts:
Some people want to complain about the weight, the way I look at it is, the weight is where it matters and if that makes a more durable scope then I'm all for it! A difference of 10-12oz (between most high end scopes) is peanuts. If you're that concerned about it, lose it somewhere else where durability isn't such a factor. My match rifle with this scope is 15.2lbs. That's not heavy.

I'm not going to repeat myself, but it's the best tactical scope I've ever used hands down. Not only will I be owning more of them, I will promote them to anyone who will listen. Why? Because I KNOW that anyone who gets one will thank me and not be disappointed.

Not only that but a company like Vortex deserves the credit. They sponsor, and support matches more then any single company I've seen. You will be hard pressed to go to a match and not see Vortex product on the table. They also listen to shooters and give us what we ask for. This scope is a shining example of that. Think about that when you make your next optic purchase, give to those who give back to us all.

RAZOR® HD GEN II 4.5-27X56 RIFLESCOPE. Zero stars. First day in the field in the rain objective lens area collected moisture/ condensate I couldn't see cross hairs. So much for top Vortex scope. I am glad I sighted in and brought another rifle.
Could be a grea gun in no rain weather. Shot it to 600 yards.

My bad eye...

By

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Razor HD Rifle Scopes:

Note to all considering monocular laser surgery...don't correct your non-shooting eye. Regardless, after a 30 year hiatus, I purchased a Bergara HMR and paired it with Razor and the eye be darned, I never looked back. My first time on the range, I shot .5MOA at 429 yards. So not the shooter, but the gear. Grandpa always said, "Get the best and you will never regret it." Denise

ONCE I HEARD ABOUT VORTEX AND SEEN THE UNLIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY IT WAS HARD TO LOOK ELSEWHERE. PLUS THE QUALITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP IS ABOVE MOST. Great ELR Optic

By

from Apex, NC

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Razor HD Rifle Scopes:

This is the second Vortex Optic I've owned. The First was a 1-6 Razor HD Gen II and then I went and bought this 4.5-27 Razor HD Gen II for my BMG. I left a very similar review for the 1-6 but I don't know what else to say... The scope does what it is supposed to do. For me, the biggest test for a scope is accurate tracking of the knobs even if you use holdovers more than you dial. The tracking is where you can really see the accuracy of the company's machining and determine if you have a nice piece of glass or if it's junk.

Yet again, Accurate Reticle and Perfect Tracking.

The scope has all of the features I like such as zero-stops, large knobs, smooth but firm adjustments. Also, lets not forget the 27x magnification!

Again Vortex, GREAT BUILD!

***Picture will not upload, I'll try again later***

I would NOT recommend this product for PRS competition

By

from Webster, NY 14590

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Razor HD Rifle Scopes:

In summer 2016, I bought a Vortex Razor Gen 2 4.5-27x56 to play in the PRS world. I have been competing in Pistol (USPSA, IPSC, IDPA, ICORE) and 3 Gun as well as running training classes for many years now. The quality of the glass, durability, lens covers, turrets are all excellent. However, the reticle is quite deficient for long range competition. The reticle has only 0.5 mils units on its horizontal and vertical axis. So if you dial a target at 1000 yards and observe a hit a 4 o'clock, you do not have any easy way of measuring that hit accurately enough like you would on a Horus reticle to quickly compensate for a second shot. For this reason, I would NOT recommend this scope or the AMG version for PRS style competition. It is difficult to play effectively at long range with the current reticle design.

I contacted Vortex about it and explained my situation to their Technical Support personnel. They did not have any options to offer me besides selling the scope online. They cannot even put the AMG reticle (which does have a 0.2 mil steps on the horizontal and vertical axis but does not have a Horus grid) into the Razor Gen 2. They also do not have any plans to include a Horus style reticle.

So if you are interested in PRS long range type of shooting, I would not recommend the reticle found inside the Vortex Razor Gen 2. I would consider getting something else more suited for PRS with a Horus style reticle.

Great Product and Company

By

from Tomball TX

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Razor HD Rifle Scopes:

Bought a Razor HD and realized the illuminated reticle was too bright. Called and explained the issue...Vortex sent me a call tag. 4 Days later a brand new in the box scope arrived at my doorstep. This company knows customer service!! Best I have seen from any industry. They always answer the phone right away, speak English, and no wait. I even know a few of them by first name now. Since then I have purchased a Crossfire II hog hunter, and all my rings...waiting on my flare illuminated bubble level, and I cant wait to pick up the new Fury Bi-nocs. I am always skeptical about reviews and never write them but I feel this company deserves one. Keep the good work, and maintain your affordable products

Excellent Scope although Heavy

By

from TX

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Razor HD Rifle Scopes:

Picked this scope up a few weeks back and finally got it out to play.

Zeroing the scope is easy and the L-tec turrets are a fantastic system. Clicks are solid and it's easy to turn the turrets if you're intending too, while the locking system keeps them secure for when you're not. Easy access to the side controlled illumination.

The glass is superb and so far I really like the EBR-1c reticle as well. It's visible at 4.5x and if you have decent vision you can read the reticle markings at the lowest magnification. Zoom in to 27x and you can still see the entire reticle subtensions down to 10 mil. Only downside is that this scope is heavy! Not to say that there aren't other heavy scopes, but this one is anything but light. Not a downside for many applications however I'd love to put another one on a hunting rifle, but probably won't because of the weight.

Razor HD

By

Comments about Vortex Optics Vortex Razor HD Rifle Scopes:

All I can say is wow! Best decision on an optic I have ever made. I was torn between the razor and a Nightforce nxs. What finally got me more than anything was warranty and ffp and all for less money. Truth is my Razor has way more to offer than the Nightforce. I mean sure Nightforce has a great reputation but Vortex takes the cake for sure. A better designed reticle and it's 1st focal plane with a 35mm main tube and high density glass. This is a work horse, my next tier 1 optic will definitly be a Vortex Razor.
