I have taken this out on a few hikes with heavy loads ranging from 40-50 lbs and it has worked very well so far. I carry about 8-10 lbs of camera gear and this pack holds it all perfectly. My camera sits in the top cover bag pouch and the tripod sits strapped to the side of the pack.
This pack's strength is in how modular it is for different tasks. I can leave everything set up as normal with the top bag set on top of the pack, or, I can take the top bag off and click it into the front of my chest for carrying my camera up front and ready for use. The two shoulder straps that hold the bag on top, can be lengthened and pulled under the arms. The bag will snap onto the straps anywhere from the upper chest down to the pelvis. If I need to carry an extra gallon of water for a section of a hike, I can also place the camera into the main backpack and put the heavier water up front. This does wonders for balancing out the load from back to front and takes much of the strain away from fighting the pack pulling backwards constantly. This is critical with heavy loads and skinny people like myself.
On top of that, the top pack also converts into a fanny pack or shoulder bag. Enough to carry water, food, TP, camera gear, etc. This will come in handy when I am trying to climb or scramble to a good photo location, but need to keep the main pack down below.
There are almost too many pockets and straps on this pack. The way I see it, they gave me an extra bunch of straps and stuff I can remove or cut off if they prove to never be useful.
The other main feature of this pack is how well it distributes the weight into the back, hips, and shoulders. 90% of the weight is directed to the lower back near the spine, which I prefer over packs that put it over the outer hips. This allows for less tension on the hip and shoulder straps to keep the load secure. If set up properly, the shoulders should feel almost no weight at all, even with over 40 lbs in the pack.
This is a great lightweight backpack for a decent price too. I have had it out for two trips so far and it is really comfortable on the shoulders and back.
After the second trip I noticed a small tear in the top cover where the seam appeared to come loose. I don't think it came off because of the hikes, just a defective cover. I emailed Teton for the warranty and they're sending me a completely new cover for no charge. They even covered the shipping cost too!
Great pack, great customer service, would definitely purchase again.
