Bought this safe as my first gun safe, everything woring fine as of now, the shelving does need upgrading, rails don't seem to line up flat so they rocka little but strong enough to hold ammo boxes. As for the 18 gun fiting, no way, may 6 scoped rifles with no side shelves, but over all mine came in great shape, best bang for the money.
Bought this safe, hauled it 15 miles home in the back of the truck and wife helped unload it which at 300 lbs was no easy task. After unboxing it, I tested it in the driveway just in case and it work fine. Moved it into the house, and tested again, this time it would not lock. Tried changing batteries and resetting combo but no luck.
I notice the batteries were getting warm and after half an hour the keypad would not work at all. Changed batteries and the keypad worked but still would not lock. Batteries heating up again. Called Stack-on but had to leave a message. No return call. Tried calling the next day and after 3 attempts, got through. They said it was probably the circuit board and were willing to help me troubleshoot but I would have to take the safe door apart to do this. No thanks, not for a brand new safe. Returned it to Sportsman's Warehouse and they were awesome. No problem at all. Exchanged it for a Browning Yukon Gold and so far so good with that one. Actually a better made safe, similar weight, cost, fire-rating, and size, but has a dial combo lock which takes longer to open, but no batteries or circuit boards to fail.
Stack-On needs to take a serious look at their quality control. As I see other problem reviews similar to this.
Was not working brand new right out of the box-it would not lock. Customer service diagnosed problem over the phone and quickly sent me the part which was easy to install-safe then worked, but-there was enough free play in door handle that the top locking pin and maybe the middle one would disengage when lever pushed to the side. Would be easy to pry open. Called cust service again and they sent a local locksmith who told stackon that he could not fix it. Stackon offered to send either a replacement safe or full refund. If safe was half as good as their customer service it would be a decent safe. Decided to take refund
Whether your reason is for safety, security/delay, or a minimal duration fire protection, I'm able to put several pieces in it that my wife or I can easily and quietly (we silenced the keypad) get to fast if needed, plus store related gear like hearing and eye protection, some ammo for each, and a handful of accessories. Since our collection includes a cpl long guns, the "document" type fire safes aren't an option, and we have the versatility to reorganize shelving later. An added plus is the door liner of pockets, which seemed largely optional on the "cabinet" type storage units.
I do recommend a light of some kind, personally I don't like the motion activated ones, but fishing around for a specific box of 50 is harder when you can't easily see if you grabbed the plinking or self-defense one without bringing it out. Also, while it shipped with 4 dessicant packs (and all shelves and pts were secured well), I am adding one of the "rechargeable" kinds. Humidity isn't a huge problem in this part of AZ, but temp variance (hence possible condensation) can be. Best to be prepared - if you live outside the desert SW, I'd advise you buy the dessicant at the same time, small detail.
The other two reviews as of May 6, 2017 as I write mine seem strongly negative for this product and based more on the customer experience than the item itself. I'd like to know if the manufacturer made the defect(s) right for them, because that's the second part of customer service, handling issues. So far, I've had a better start, and hope to never have to find out, but it would be nice to know for reference if/when it comes time to buy another or different safe.
I got it home and in the house with the help of friends. Unboxed it and when setting up I noticed the code reset button was missing. I am going back to the store to see what they will do about it. I certainly don't want to have to lug it back to the store for a replacement to lug back home. If I have to lug it back to the store then I will get a refund and go somewhere else.
These are junk the key pad quit working after 3 days took it back to store got a new one got it home and unpacked the new one and same thing buttons intermittently work it's a really nice structure but if it didn't have the junk electric key pad system it would be a really nice safe but due to that not working I'm giving it 1 star
