I bought two of the Spinfishers V's back in Feb, a 4500 and a 5500. The number of advanced features on them simply put these reels in the class of Shimano's Biomaster SW series (for which I have the 5000 size). The Spinfishers are really smooth and robust, the quality is really up there with the Shimano's. They are all great great reels but when the Shimano's cost more than double than the Spinfisher so I think I know who the winner is. Pound for pound I cannot find anything equal or come even close to the Spinfisher V yet. I am not a die hard fan of any brand but Penn really has won me over this time round and I think I will stick with them for a while.

I received my SSV4500 in early August and have used it exclusively for surfcasting for Striper and Bluefish. I'll preface this by saying that I like the reel quite a bit. The drag is great and it's handled some decent size stripers and blues with no problems. It's durable and solidly constructed. I thought it would serve as an alternative to spending $600+ for a Torque. BUT THIS REEL IS NOT WATER TIGHT! Sure, the drag and gear box are sealed but a good splash from a wave or an accidental dunk and any water that gets under the spool is going right to the pinion and on to the main bearing. Maybe the reel isn't right for the application and maybe I'm hard on my equipment but all the advertising I read and videos I watched, always lauded the water tight design features. In this particular case, I wish their advertising had been more straight forward. For now I'm hoping it limps a long to the end of the season before I send it in for service. However, I still trust Penn's overall quality. They've been making great fishing products for generations. Come next spring I'll be looking for a Torque.

A reel with guts.

Comments about Penn Spinfisher V Spinning Reel:

bought a 6500 LL a couple of months ago and just had a chance to use it on black drum in the Delaware Bay. Caught one that weighed about 60 lbs. The reel had no trouble handling the fish but it sure did wear me out.

Strong enough to reel in anything or anchor boat

By

Comments about Penn Spinfisher V Spinning Reel:

I've had the 850 for over a year. I've caught many fish on it, grouper, snapper, kingfish, african pompano, sharks. Nothing better than the PENN SPINFISHER. My dad and grandfather both had the same reels. My grandfather actually used of the original green reels I think from the 40's or 50's. My 850ss is so strong, I've actually held bottom at anchor in over 200ft of water with a 3 kt current. The reel wouldn't give an once and the boat was held in place. I ended up cutting the line otherwise, I'd still be there. Nothing better on the market than this spinner. Wash it off each time and you are ready to go.

Best reels I've ever owned.. but..

By

from South Florida

Comments about Penn Spinfisher V Spinning Reel:

I started with the 5500 and was very pleased how it handled inshore Snook and Tarpon, so I purchased the 6500LL for the added line capacity and live liner feature. I fish almost exclusively freelining large live mullet as bait so I thought the live liner would be the perfect fit for me. However, I have found it to be hit or miss. I really like this reel.. BUT on numerous occasions after a fish strike the bale rotated by itself enough to prematurely engage the main drag. I lost several big fish because of that. Now I find myself having to hold the bale and check the line often to make sure I'm still on LL drag. Had I known that I might have saved a few dollars and stuck with the non LL model. To be fair, maybe I got a faulty product? Still, I would recommend these reels. They are smooth, solid construction and should hold up for years. Just don't put all your trust in the live liner.

Tough as old boots

By

from Malta EU

Comments about Penn Spinfisher V Spinning Reel:

These reels come at a realistic cost but are tough as old boots and proper work horses. I use these for all my big game fishing and would never change.....there are better reels but at a far higher cost. A cost I am not willing to pay incase they go overboard on the Kayak for instance.....

By

from Daytona Beach, FL, United States

Comments about Penn Spinfisher V Spinning Reel:

I have been surf fishing for a few years now and all of my gear is failing. 3 solid seasons of cleaning, rinsing, cleaning, rinsing... The Okuma's have started hitting the resale list and i started with the 8500LL. Impressive! I will add a few more to my arsenal this season!

Spinfisher V 10500

By

from Florida

Comments about Penn Spinfisher V Spinning Reel:

I just received my 10500's.These are huge and will work perfect for the big game fishing I do in the gulf of mexico. I have older models from 4500s on up to 950 and now the 10500s in my arsenal.I love em all. They are so tough.I catch little baitfish and everything up to giant goliath grouper and they just dont stand a chance against my penn reels. Thanks penn for some of the best memories ever.

Simply The Best!

By

from Salt Lake City, UT, United States

Comments about Penn Spinfisher V Spinning Reel:

I've paid more spinning reels from other top brands, and the drag system on these is so far superior, it's ridiculous. The build quality and smooth operation is also superior. I recently picked up a 4500LL...all it took was a couple of 35 pound redfish, and a 60 pound shark, and I'll never go back...Penn for life!
