Wanting to get into fly fishing, but not wanting to invest too much in a possible fleeting fancy, I decided to get this combo. I unfortunately was very dissapointed in it. The first time out one of the eyes broke, the line that came with it was in a constant tangle and the pole is really stiff. For a few dollars more you can have a set-up that you will get alot more enjoyment out of.Terry of Riverdale, UT - May, 14 2013:
I bought this for my son because he was interested in fly fishing. We've gone out a few times and it's worked alright. It's not a great piece of equipment, but what do you expect from something as cheap as this? If you want to learn or have a kid who might be interested then it's a decent set to get them started.Michael of Lake Havasu City, AZ - August, 11 2014:
My daughter bought me this kit for Christmas last year, since I have always wanted to get into fly fishing. My first impression was that there was something horribly wrong with my casting, until I took a fly fishing class and found I was casting fairly well with one of their loaner rods. Then went back to this and had problems all over again. Took the rod and reel out three times, caught three very small sunfish; on the last one, probably 3 or 4 inches long, the rod broke, below the first joint, when I was setting the hook. The fly line is very rough and doesn't slide well through the guides and the leader is prone to kinking. I didn't really expect much for a thirty dollar fly combo, but I did expect more than this. A $30 spincast combo is of MUCH higher quality. I will be buying another rod and reel, as I have enjoyed what little fly fishing I was able to do, but I will NOT be buying any Martin products, for sure.
