I own 3 of these and like everything about the pack except for the two undersized buckles and straps on the flap that secures the load. We've broken a couple of these when packing moose quarters and heads out. These should be the same size and webbing used on the waist belt side tensioners to handle the load....that would make this a 5 star pack!
I've used the product for both hunting/hauling purposes and for extended BSA hikes (Philmont, Beartooths, Rockies, Sierras, Olympic Penn, etc...). With ~700 miles on it, I think I can speak with some insight/authority about it. Note: I've attached the Kelty Cache Hauler Pack to this frame.
All aspects from its freestanding ability - thanks to the hinged rear rack - to it's internal pack cover and extremely well placed mounting points is well thought out. The pack is ballistically sound having withstood many drops, scrapes, and potential punctures. After many miles mine shows very little sign of wear/usage and continues to be my 'go to' pack for long distance and large game hunting outings.
Are there things I'd like changed/upgraded? Sure. Would I like it to be a bit lighter? Ya, of course. But I'd also like to find a new Porsche for the price of a Honda...
Net-Net: If you're looking for a serious load bearing pack that's both comfortable and nearly unbreakable, the Kelty Cache Hauler Freighter Frame may well be your best bet.
I have not used this one, but used one just like it in Montana packing out Elk. The Kelty works like a dream. Would suggest to anyone wanting to pack a heavy load. All of the weight is on your shoulders not on your hips.
Very comfortable - Distributes weight nicely
Great pack from a great company that stands behind their products! Packed out two bull elk with it this year and it was extremely stabile throughout the trip.
I hauled out two complete 6x7 and a 7x7 Rocky Bulls Head sets with full head brains and all in them. Heck the dang guys did not even bone out the neck brisket portion of the mount to lighten it up for me. I knew they had cut off the front brisket and all but thought they boned it out. Not these bozo's. I carried one out then just picked up my rifle and made tracks for the top of the canyon again. It was not till after I got the second one down off the mountain that they asked me If I knew an easy way to bone the neck out So they did not lose all the neck and brisket meat out of the hide. They knew the butcher would not do it. and the Taxidermist would let the meat spoil. I made sure for then on to double check the pack before I put it on my back. They weighed over 120 each pack Dang glad it was a great pack setup. dray PS about recommending it to a friend. If I carry your pack out it better be one of these. I own one you dang well better also.
loved the side flaps and the ornge cover that it comes with. It made packing my bull elk easy.
Frame is comfortable but a bit large for females and the top cross straps are a bit uncomfortable for a female. But I would still recommend any of the Kelty products, their quality is top of the line.
would like to have had a strait pole to sling my rifle on, but my mod worked just fine
