Gregg Ritz of portsmouth, NH - September, 04 2013:
At the top of my travel checklist sits my new DeLorme inReach SE! With cell service covering only 10% of the world the inReach keeps me connected to my family and friends wherever I roam. With 2-way texting, interactive SOS, tracking capabilities, and even the ability to post to Facebook. This little unit is quickly becoming a favorite addition on any trip.WallyDuncanHunterman of Kodiak, AK - April, 18 2014:
Having been born and raised on Kodiak Island, I know the value of the "insurance" that satcom devices provide. Over the years, I have owned an Iridium 9505, Globalstar 1600, Inmarsat Mini-M [in the 1990's], SPOT2, SPOT Connect [which was hopeless] ACR PLB, and now most recently the inReach device. To keep it short and sweet - this device blows me away. - Its easy to use - Its works anywhere - even under dense canopy [most recently on my trip from Moose Pass down to Kenai the unit didn't miss a beat] - The built in keyboard should have been done long time ago, and its a HUGE step forward from my old SPOT and my MicroFix. - Its rugged and durable [rains a lot here in kodiak] -Its super easy on the wallet. I just got the Safety plan, which is reasonable at just $15/month. BUT - what I like the MOST is that I can now Suspend my "Freedom Plan" service during the 7 months out of the year when I don't need it [no penalty to suspend service]. I've been waiting for years for a satellite-based device tat a reasonable price & can lets you type and send custom messages with a real keyboard & get confirmation that it's been sent. While I have not yet used SOS, the sales rep in Soldotna told me that in SOS mode, I can do direct 2-way messaging with the IERCC to tell them the nature of my distress, so they can be adequately prepared when they find me. The keyboard takes a bit of learning, but after you send a coupe of messages, you get the hang of it. No big deal. About the battery: I have found it to be more than adequate. I'm getting almost 150 hours on the battery in pilot mode [just turned on], The message usually gets out in about 10 seconds, and every message wnet off without a glitch.. I've never had problems getting messages in or out, even under thick canopy, If your life is important to you, and keeping in touch with your honey earns you bonus points, inReach SE is definitely the only way to go.Michael Porter of Bakersfield, CA - May, 02 2014:
As a professional guide, my SE is HANDS-DOWN, the best tracking, GPS, Satellite Communicator piece of equipment I have ever had. Period. I have been using GPS, satphones, SPOT, PLB's and satellite communicators for many years now. I had the SPOT2 and 3 device, then the inReach Gen 1 [black] and now SE. Paired with my iPhone, the SE is not even close, the easiest to use and best overall tracking GPS / Satellite Communicator piece of equipment I have ever had. Maps are easy to download to my iPhone App [and super cool], 2 min. tracking is instant, broadcasting my speed, direction, and elevation is a bonus. I don't use Facebook or Twitter so I can't comment on that Used properly and carefully, the battery life is really good [ I get about 120 hours off it before it needs a recharge]. When I am gone for more than a week, I bring along my Goal Zero solar charger and battery and charge my SE with the USB cable without any problems. I have stayed out on the field for weeks and my SE has never let me down or not deliver what it is supposed to do. The SE website portal is user friendly. The SE has helped my work in creating narratives from my hunts and guided tours. I read some other reviews and unfortunately I haven't had any of the "bad" experiences some seems to have had. I definitely recommend this product.
